An Issue in Sherlock That Annoys Me and Why
shuofthewind:
Just some thoughts about perspectives on intelligence in Sherlock. I get the feeling this will be a long post, so I’m going to stick it under a Read More so I don’t inflict it on all of you. Still, I think it might be interesting, so….

Oh god. Do studios just not get how people view media these days?
parislemon:
Get ready for this one — it’s huge. In fact, you better sit down.
You know the 28-day window* that studios now impose between when a DVD goes on sale and when it can be made available to rent?
It’s about to made 56 days, reports Peter Kafka.
Boom.
Hollywood is saved. DVD sales are going to flow like wine again....

Oops
It has to happen at one point in your life. As you spin off an American Interstate, completely helpless in the passenger seat, you get a chance to prioritise some things. Very quickly.
Obviously, the first thing that goes through your head is how do I stop this. Once that’s out the way, things become much more organised and calm.
Next up, you get a chance to focus on who you love and how...

Not the Mexicans!
Since it last occurred to me to muse on my American expedition, an awful lot has happened. It’s been months since I was in Dayton at the Air Force Museum, and that scares me a bit.
Life seems to move quickly.
So as I sit here with a chilled Chenin Blanc, my favourite music warming my ears, I feel it might be nice for completeness if I continued my self-important ramblings about what I did...

Seeing things from the other side
It’s not often that I get a chance to see things from a different perspective. It’s a funny thing to consider, but I got confronted by this on our trip to the US Air Force museum. That in itself is an amazing place, and in my about the visit I guess you can see my excitement and enthusiasm for all the planes.
There was one thing that struck me. They fought a war out here, known to us as...

Dayton Days
The business end of a big old jet.
Dayton, Ohio, is merely 40 miles up the road (as we say in Scotland), and it is the place credited with the development of the first practical aircraft.
That’s a bit of a mouthful.
Suffice to say, the Wright brothers Wilbur and Orville lived there and used their bike shop to develop the world’s first heavier than air aircraft that could...

Made In America
“The Manufacturing sector comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products.
Establishments in the Manufacturing sector are often described as plants, factories, or mills and characteristically use power-driven machines and materials-handling equipment. However, establishments that transform materials...

The Land of Plenty
I’m not much of a photographer, y’know?
I like taking pictures, but I’ve never been consistently good at it. I’m drawn to take pictures of things that I find interesting, amusing and attractive, but they’re rarely techically good photos. I only know the basics, rule of thirds, the basics behind depth of field, the importance of focussing on the subject and whatnot. Regardless, I keep a flickr...

Audacious, Scrobbling and like.fm
It’s late, invariably I’m awake doing nerd things… Tonight, it’s getting worked up over the fact that I can’t submit to like.fm (my new favourite replacement for last.fm) from Audacious, my media player of choice on this wee machine.
First port of call, checkout the code on git… After poking around, it turns out that I can transform the address that the program...

30 Day Geek Challenge - Day 4: Favorite Book
My favourite geek book has to be, without a doubt, V for Vendetta.
I think the characters are brilliant. I think the story is brilliant. I love the way that Moore uses other people’s conflicting opinions and beliefs to leave you to decide how you feel about V.
I love Moor’s perspective on it…
“The central question is, is this guy right? Or is he mad? What do you, the...

30 Day Geek Challenge - Day 2: Favorite Geek
Favourite Geek? This is pretty tough.
Actually, it’s not… It was kinda cemented a while back. My favourite geek has to be a guy called Darren Kitchen… Host of weekly podcast Hak5 which I quite enjoy, hacker in the “old school” sense of playing with things to make them do new, fun things and general do-er of nerd things and taker upper of projects.
My favourite...

Believe it or not, this is quite difficult for me. I’ve not always been heavily into technology/interwebs/so on. I didn’t always have direct access to the information superhighway and things to play with, but I did have a TV. And TV was the portal to Star Trek. And Star Trek (TNG) is the portal to…
